Surgery Technician
Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Surgical Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in assisting veterinarians during surgical procedures, ensuring the highest standards of care for our animal patients. This position requires a strong understanding of veterinary practices, excellent communication skills, and a passion for animal welfare.
Duties
- Prepare surgical instruments and equipment prior to procedures, ensuring all tools are sterile and ready for use.
- Assist veterinarians during surgeries by providing necessary instruments and maintaining a sterile field.
- Monitor the condition of animals under anesthesia and report any changes to the veterinarian.
- Perform animal handling and restraint techniques to ensure the safety of both the animal and the surgical team.
- Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, including pre-operative assessments and post-operative care instructions.
- Conduct laboratory tests as needed, including blood work and other diagnostics.
- Educate pet owners on post-surgical care and recovery protocols.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the surgical area, adhering to aseptic techniques at all times.
- Assist Veterinarian or staff including but not limited to performing x-rays offsite, assisting with physical exams, administering vaccines/preventatives, entering medical paperwork
- Calculate, record, and assist in heartworm treatments.
- Train and monitor the volunteers that help with recovery in surgery.
- Other duties as assigned
Skills
- Proficient in aseptic technique to maintain sterile environments during surgical procedures.
- Familiarity with veterinary terminology to effectively communicate within the team.
- Experience in animal catheterization, intubation, handling, and restraint methods.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures relevant to veterinary medicine.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with pet owners and team members alike.
- Pull- up, record and maintain surgery-controlled drug logs. Report any discrepancies to the Shelter Health Manager.
- Record and enter all surgery notes, medical notes and veterinarian required foster check-up appointment notes.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Surgery Technician will work both indoors and outdoors. Must be able to stand, walk, and move for extended periods of time. Must be able to have reliable transportation to conduct all work at the shelter in Summerville and travel to other clinics. This role requires flexibility and the ability to stand, lift, kneel, crouch, and bend. Requires routine use of medical supplies and clinic equipment. Light travel is required. Schedule may include weekend and holiday work, overtime as needed
Requirements
- Licensed Veterinary Technician certification
- Euthanasia certified, or willingness to gain certification
- Physical requirements include but not limited to walking, standing and moving of animals/equipment of 50lbs, bending and kneeling repeatedly

Community Support Coordinator
Job Overview
The Community Support Coordinator is responsible for developing and executing programs to connect animals with their loved ones, communicate with the public by being on the Community Support desk along with other departments at the shelter. Excellent communication and empathy skills will be required in order to thrive in the position. The duties for the Community Support Coordinator include but are not limited to the list below:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Handle both dogs and cats
- Effective use of different technologies- texting apps, Shelterluv, google calendars
- FANTASTIC customer service skills
- De-escalate any customer situations that could be disruptive
- Research and comb through missing pet pages to reunite animals with their families
- Call microchip companies to reunite animals
- Ensure messaging is consistent regarding the program and its services
- Liaise with the medical team, behavior team and adoption team about case and possible treatment pathways
- Ensure all waivers and consent forms are signed, and all records are accurate and maintained.
- Documentation is critical
- Maintain inventory and supplies for the program
- Ensure data collection and tracking to measure program outcomes.
- Provide empathy, compassion and emotional support to clients as needed in a variety of situations, including pet loss, housing insecurity and evictions, family crisis and trauma.
- Provide regular check-ins and follow-up support in an effort to maintain relationships with community members
- Working the intake desk to assist the community with questions/ concerns, intaking animals, offering solutions to avoid surrender, answering phone calls/texts/emails
